What is Ultraviolet?

How to choose an effective UV sterilizing product?

Let's take a look!!!

What is Ultraviolet

UV radiation is present in sunlight

There are 3 kinds of UV defined by the range of wavelength.

UVA

Wavelength:400nm-315nm

The most observed UV on Earth’s surface. UVA can penetrate glasses and reach indoors. Excessive exposure of UVA will accelerate aging of the skin, cause wrinkles, and suntan. UVA is mostly used for detecting counterfeit money and bodily fluids, parts of bug zapper, and the process of nail art.

UVB

Wavelength:315nm-280nm

Most of UVB is blocked by the ozone layer, only a small fraction UVB remains in UV radiation. UVB can be blocked by glasses, but with long exposure of UVB will cause sunburn. UVB is also used in therapy and chemical reaction.

UVC

Wavelength:280nm-100nm

UVC has a very short wavelength and almost no UVC reaches the Earth's surface. UV at these germicidal wavelengths can damage DNA/RNA; therefore, UVC is frequently used for sterilization in biology laboratories and medical facilities.

DUV Sterilization

Microorganisms such as bacteria, virus, parasites, germs, and algae etc. are reproduced by budding or sporogenesis. A vast amount of bacteria, viruses, and microorganisms can absorb UV at wavelengths of 280nm - 260nm. By exposing UVC, the germicidal wavelengths can destroy the structure of DNA/RNA and make these organisms unable to form protein; thus, killing the organism or becoming infertile.

UVC dose adds up. Exposing under UVC for too long or coming in contact with the eyes is not recommended.

The amount of UVC dose needed to kill each microorganism varies.

UVC dose needed = UVC intensity × exposure time

Higher UVC intensity with a short amount of time is equal to lower UVC intensity with a longer amount of time as long as the product of UVC dose is the same.

The irradiance inside the OCONNOR Sterilizer Pouch is higher than 182 μW/cm^2 (when given the length of 3cm from the DUV source).

How to choose an effective UV sterilizing product?

To perform an effective sterilization, we need the right wavelength of UVC and enough amount of UVC dose.

Wavelength

According to research, a UV wavelength of 260-280nm is the most effective for sterilization.

The wavelength of DUV LED that OCONNOR Portable UVC Light Sterilizer Pouch has installed falls in the peak value ranging 265nm - 275nm, which is the most ideal wavelength for DNA to absorb.

*The mercury--vapor lamp has various peak value of wavelength determined by the input power. Therefore, the wavelength is not necessarily between 260~280nm.

Time and Distance

The “exposure time” and “distance (a factor in IV intensity)” need to be labeled.

*Handheld UVC sterilizers need to be close enough to the item for a while to have an effective sterilization.

Voltage

6V is needed to operate a DUV LED.

*Voltage lower than 6V cannot turn on the UVC LED!
